Vote for Hiba!

Midd Blog endorses Hiba Fakhoury ‘09 for 2008-2009 Student Government Association President.

Hiba stands for:

  • Improving transportation to and from the Burlington Airport and Bus Station, New York City, Boston, and Montreal
  • Extending the working hours of MiddRides, particularly during the winter. (As a person who has sustained frost bite because MiddRides was not available when I needed it, I can say that this is a big plus!)
  • Improving the social scene: more events, simplified system of registering parties, etc.
  • A fully networked wireless campus. (Dartmouth has had one for years!)
  • Initiatives to reduce energy and paper waste. For example, providing a limited number of E-Res articles to promote sharing, instead of printing. (You can feel less guilty when you receive e-mails from Count Paper.)
  • Increasing the number of laundry facilities. (No need to Febreeze your clothes!)

Hiba is an all-around fantastic candidate for SGA President! She took the initiative last summer to field questions from incoming Midd first-years– Seven Days Vermont called her, “A maverick Ann Landers.” And did I mention that Hiba is a firefighter?

Be sure to check out Hiba’s Facebook group for her letter of intent and a more detailed list of what she hopes to accomplish as SGA President.

For all the grief I gave SGA President Max Nardini last year as he assumed office as the shoe-in candidate with little/no competition, he has done something remarkable — invigorated interest in the SGA. That is his largest accomplishment.

Hiba is going to have competition as the vote will get split among many many candidates: Hiba Fakhoury, Mike Tierney, Bobby Joe Smith, Dave Dolginow, Graham Majorhart, Mike Panzer, and Aki Ito (all of which have Facebook groups but not necessarily official declarations). That’s the list so far… if you’re not on there, then get on facebook.

Right now, it’s shaping up to be a battle of the special interest groups on campus: SNG vs. International Students vs. Athletics, etc. Who can get out the most votes? It’s anyone’s guess. But any way you look at it, competition is good and should make for a continued upward trend in the SGA.

You forgot MOQA in there, which has proven to be one of the most mobile of the special interest groups this year. Hiba and Aki are active members.

Wow, I’m so glad special interest groups aren’t just ruining national politics but Middlebury politics as well.

Shouldn’t the election for SGA president and SCCOCC focus on the issues and who can best represent the interests of the ENTIRE Middlebury community rather than just the groups to which he/she belongs? Sometimes a leader has to put aside his/her views in favor of doing what is right for the whole. This should not be a race based on what sports a person plays or what activities he/she does but on what the ideas and qualities that person brings to the table.

Also, here’s the list of SGA candidates:
Mike West
Mike Tierney
Bobby Joe Smith III
Dave Dolginow
Flint Reilly
Hiba Fakhoury
Aki Ito
Andrew Ward
Graham Majorhart
Mike Panzer

First, to get things straight, the SGA election should focus on neither interest groups nor the issues, but rather what is most important: good looks and the ability to distribute lollipops to the entire student body. I expect all of the candidates to perform well on both counts.
Second, Mr. Kellett, while I am certainly pleased with the increased notoriety the SGA has received this year, I would not say that garnering this support has been my largest accomplishment. Rather, I feel that this year was marked by three overarching successes: one in the fall, one in jterm, and one in the spring.
Fall semester, my biggest accomplishment was definitely sending the SGA Senate agenda out 24 hours before the meeting *almost* every week. For Jterm, my accomplishment was, of course, snow boarding every day possible. Then, spring term, my largest success was transferring the Senate agenda-writing responsibility to the Speaker of the Senate, thus allowing me more time for beginning-of-the-term snow boarding.
I hope this brief comment has proved insightful. You’ve been away for a while in a far off land, Mr. Kellett, so I figured I would bring you up to speed with this “insiders look” that hitherto only Campus reporters have been privileged enough to receive.
- Still President (at least for a few more days, right?) Nardini

I was wondering when Mr. Nardini would chime in. And he has provided us with great insight into the inner-workings of the SGA…

Now, we just need to identify who’s the Obama candidate and vote for him or her for SGA President.

I’d be happy to give the real rundown/background of this year’s candidates (what you won’t see in the Campus) but unfortunately I haven’t met four of them, meaning I’d have to analyze them purely on their facebook profiles and pictures.

What’s stopping you, Ryan? A carefully crafted Facebook profile is worth a thousand words.

It is true. That is why my facebook profile includes a quote from “The Notebook” (”if you’re a bird, I’m a bird”). This quote cuts right to my core.

Ooh, MiddBlog and The Campus split on the endorsements…

Campus Endorses Bobby Joe Smith

It’s ok. We can still be friends.
