Sunday Reading: Bloomberg, UFOs and Oprah
It’s been a slightly bizarre newsweek, filled more with odd celebrity stories and polling reports than real news. Nevertheless, here are a few links to enjoy with your coffee or chai this morning.
- PALIN: The Governor and Republican nominee supposedly has a clothes budget of $150,000. Some are outraged by this, others point out that it’s not exactly illegal and some are a bit concerned that this money isn’t being spent on the governor’s wardrobe at all.
- FASHION: Fashion mogul Karl Lagerfeld has bought a mansion on Lake Champlain. Though in a recent interview with one of the Olsen twins, he mentioned how he only surrounds himself with people he likes. Don’t expect any tent formals located on his lawn any time soon.
- TERM LIMITS: The New York City council agreed this week to extend terms limits for the city’s Mayor. Apparently, everyone hearts Michael Bloomberg. But will we still after a third term?
- DOLLAR: The strength of the dollar this year means there may be fewer people in the way of Midd students on the slopes this year.
- ALIENS: Apparently the main target for US pilots during the Cold War was not in fact Russia, but was instead UFOs. Does this mean that Independence Day isn’t fiction after all?
- ECONOMY: An exclusive from Bloomberg takes a look at why Wall Street CEOs ignored the warning signs for years and outlines the goals for the upcoming summit in Davos, Switzerland, or what is being called, if somewhat wistfully, “The Bretton Woods of the New Millenium”.
- OPRAH: Rumors are arising that Oprah, under an Obama administration, wants to be ambassador to London. While this may seem strange and the folks over at the UK Spectator aren’t too happy, props to anyone who can name the current ambassador to London.
- HALLOWEEN: While I’m at a loss to find a site with decent costume recommendations, Wired’s guide to creating a basic haunted house this year seems pretty applicable to dorm rooms.
- SNL: As of late last night, comedians Amy Poehler and Will Arnett are the proud new parents of baby boy Archie.
SITE OF THE WEEK: Seth’s Blog. If you’re not already reading, even occassionally, Seth Godin’s blog, you probably should be. From market critiques to personal advice, author and marketing guru Seth Godin offers up daily pearls of wisdom that can make anyone a more informed person.
PS: Happy Birthday Hillary Clinton!
