Campus 10/22

This week in The (food themed) Campus:

  • Midnight Breakfast to return and more transit options: ACTR service to Burlington on Saturdays and additional run on Sundays all at a lower price will certainly be welcome, because those Zipcars go quick. And what? Midnight Breakfast is back? There is a whole group a youngsters out there that have never experienced the miracle of doughnuts, eggs, and waffles in the middle of an exam-studying night. Maybe that’ll make up for the closing of the library at 1AM during finals to save $11,000. And The Campus is convinced the Library is a “bastion of academic culture.” No wonder it’s so loud in there. And all this news from the SGA?
  • Econ and PoliSci remain top majors: No surprise here. But really, how many of us are in these majors because it helps us get jobs? Or is iBanker off the wishlist now?
  • College considers new language partnership: President Liebowitz is working to put the Middlebury brand on language-learning software. That’s right, the next Rosetta Stone will be Middlebury, your trusted provider of language acquisition. Midd provides the “language content” and leaves the technical stuff to a company. The software will target 7th-12th graders, also the target population for Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy (MMLA) launchedin 2008. Why?: 1) innovation (school is language leader), 2) access (moral obligation), 3) revenue (school needs $). People question if software will tarnish school’s reputation or enhance it?

Too much news? I know… breath and continue below.

  • Matt Biette: This might as well been his edition of the newspaper. First, a profile on him. Second, him explaining why Proctor has sausages every day for lunch. Third, a roundup of local food vendors to the school of which he’s in charge. And fourth/finally, a debate on what defines local according to Biette.
  • Kohn Memorial: “A longtime friend of Middlebury College, Kohn passed away in August, leaving behind generations of athletes who will never forget the impact he had upon their lives. …It was only recently that Liebowitz discovered Kohn had put together a $1.5 million gift to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a donation that seems almost superfluous in light of Kohn’s immeasurable contribution to athletics at Middlebury.”
  • College offers second early retirement: Dissection of Pres. Liebowitz’s email last week. Still all voluntary staff reduction.
  • Organic Garden receives additional funding: Anonymous donation for $120,000 over 5-6 years. But that’s not enough to endow a fund to pay the gardener-in-chief and adviser for years to come.
