Blowin’ Up The Champlain Bridge

The biggest story in Addison County this year was the abrupt October 16 closing of the Champlain Bridge due to safety concerns.  The 80-year-old bridge, which connects the town of Addison to Crown Point, New York, is beyond repair and will be demolished on Monday. Local and national reports have documented how the closure has complicated people’s lives and hurt our local businesses.

The bridge is owned jointly by the two states, and both are working to help the affected communities.  New York State has allocated $2.94 million to businesses on its side of the lake, and Vermont Governor Jim Douglas has proposed giving $1 million of federal stimulus money to affected Addison County businesses. Governor Douglas’ proposal will be taken up by the State Assembly in January.

This youtube performance offers some Woody Guthrie-esque protest and a much-needed lighthearted take on the situation:

Hat tip: This youtube was forwarded to me by the wonderful Vermont Ukulele Society.
