- Thankfully, Middlebury students studying abroad in Chile and Argentina were unscathed by the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated Chile last week. The response time of the Schools Abroad program to let everyone know what was going on: 32 minutes. Not bad.
- There will be seven recipients of honorary degrees presented at commencement on May 23, among them, commencement speakers Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wudunn, Academy-Award winning documentary filmmaker Errol Morris, and Burlington Free Press “Vermonter of the Year” Beth Robinson.
- 7,976 students applied to join the Class of 2014, which is a 16% increase from last year. Strangely, there was only a two-percent increase in student visits. There appears to be a correlation between Middlebury’s strengthened reputation in recent years and increasing numbers of prospective students applying in the dark.
- Neil and Otto’s Pizza becomes Pazzo’s. From what I’ve been told, some students would have rather had them change their recipe.
- SGA to contribute $47,000 for OINK (Outdoor Introduction for New Kids) 2014, another strong showing of financial support for Middlebury’s outdoor orientation programs.
- Middlebury skiing finishes third overall at Winter Carnival, men’s basketball beats Colby in the NESCAC semis but falls to Williams in the championship game, and men’s and women’s hockey advance to the semifinal round of the NESCAC tournament, beating Tufts and Hamilton respectively. Receiving an at-large bid, men’s basketball, ranked overall at no. 6 in D-III, is playing Gordon this Friday night at Pepin Gymnasium for a chance to grab their first ever NCAA tournament victory.

I’d like to think the high number of applicants is telling. I’ve been pretty proud of stuff the Middlebury administration has been doing lately — budget, environmental things, the MIIS merger. Of course, no one can really discern why more people are applying than before…
I wish there would be a proportional increase in visits, though. College guidebooks and other resources tend to generalize too much, and if all you see are those blurbs and the MiddKid rap video, Middlebury might just look like other NESCAC schools, which it isn’t AT ALL. I wasn’t convinced about Middlebury until I came to campus for a weekend.
