I do not think this tractor is attractive — The Middlebury music scene

As I write this post I am sitting in my dorm room, listening to the decidedly unvaried and repetitive musical choices pounding through my relatively thin walls from the neighbors next door. After listening to “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz and Justin Bieber’s “Baby” several times apiece I began to wonder if my fellow Hepburn residents had any musical taste beyond the most popular pop/rock songs from the past month. It was then that I heard it- yes, something new, something different- but what was it? That’s right it was Kenny Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.”

I began to wonder where Middlebury students got their musical tastes from and if, in fact, there were other students with hopefully more diverse musical interests.  With this in mind, I am beginning my quest to seek out the sources of music at Middlebury, be they a cappella, student bands, or the student-run radio station and inform you of them so you don’t turn out like my cliché (albeit nice) neighbors.

To start it off, many Midd students do not know about the Gamut room.  Open as a cafe and (hipster) study area during the weeknights, the Gamut room is also a performance space, hosting events like the Middlebury Moth.  This Friday at dinnertime, the Gamut room is celebrating its opening with performances by Whale Belly and Beach Fossils in the Gampitheater.  Check it out, should be pretty fun!  Keep an eye out for upcoming Gamut performances as well.

now what on earth is wrong with “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy”? Or anything on the Top 40 charts? Music prudes are annoying. If you’ve ever gotten a Katy Perry song stuck in your head, you know what I mean. Some songs aren’t crazy original or explorative, but it doesn’t mean people can’t enjoy them.

Let’s get off of our collective high horse and just let each other enjoy music.

I’d just like to clarify that I’m not saying that these musical choices are bad or that they aren’t catchy but just that I think Middkids can afford to try out new things sometimes. To be honest though, I was under the impression that “She thinks my Tractor’s sexy” is something people can universally make fun of.

I think you have a good point, but the aggressive tone of your post only serves to undermine your argument.

Before you quickly put aside music as being too mainstream for you, maybe you should try something new and give a few songs a try. Sure, a lot of them are pretty shitty, but maybe one or two will surprise you!

What, like farmers tans, trailer parks, and poor people?

This kind of post makes me sad to be a midd kid.

You are in college in Addison County Vermont and you choose this time to make fun of country music and the culture behind it? Not smart.

Thought: The day people stop defensively trying to assert their identities by putting down others’ musical taste will be a wonderful day.

Maybe, that day, we’ll just be able to listen.

And no, you shouldn’t have to apologize for making fun of a song about a tractor.

No, there was no indictment in the post of country music or the people of Addison County. Come on. And even if someone doesn’t like most country music, who cares?

You can do better, anonymous commenter. Find an original way of proving to yourself that you’re edgy. Lots of people have already tried putting down others’ musical taste. (Although the majority of them have the courage to use their names when they do it.)

    Absurd!

I love it when youtube-level commentators venture their way into other websites, such as this.

No, no, no, I’m not saying you’re wrong, “really?”. Don’t worry. This “Olivia” character clearly hates poor people. And yes, we should form a grassroots movement to unseat her from the highly sought after position of middblog blogperson. Blerg.

I’m with Edna – how would one go about assembling a witchhunt to root out these wrong thinkers? I’ll bet they hate America too; in fact I’m so sure of it that I’m perfectly willing to demonize their entire existence based on their opinion of a single song.
