Real World: San Diego Episode 5 Recap

Still not sure what all this is about? Neither are we. But here are Recaps 1 thru 4.

Episode 5: “Over the Rainbow”

After a slooow episode last week, viewers tuned in last night to give the “Real World” another chance to deliver. Most of this week’s installment seemed to be a build-up to next week’s San Diego Pride Parade episode, but there were enough tears and partisan redecorating initiatives to keep things interesting.

An unexpected phone call in the show’s opening minutes set the stage for the drama to follow. Sam learns from a friend back home that her two closest friends were seriously injured in car accident, and that one of them lost a leg. Nate steps in to comfort her. The perfect storm unfolds when Zach, both unaware of the bad news and incapable of contributing to the show much more than bigotry and suspiciously large pectorals, makes an off-the-cuff threat to “beat the gay” out of Sam. Whether his comment was intentional or just plain stupid, it’s too much to sweep under the rug. Zach makes matters worse by refusing to apologize (points for consistency, at least?)

Next up- the gang heads to job interviews at the House of Blues, where they’ll be working as bartenders and hosts/hostesses. The ease of the process is slightly cringe-worthy considering that nearly 1 in 10 Americans is unemployed, but since when is Real World supposed to be tactful, huh?

SGA Sound Off: Run-Off Begins Amidst Candidate Disqualification

Another election season, another season of election mayhem! From the chalk decor freshly sprouting all over campus to the pictures and videos of candidates in their million dollar smiles — there’s nothing quite like awaiting SGA Election results that cause my heart to skip a few beats and my eyes to be glued to my email.

First, let me be one among many to congratulate the two  newest members of the Senate: First Year Senators  Rana Ahdelhama and Danny Zhang! All of the candidates were clearly devoted to both student government and their class, and Blake, you made a great campaign.

Second, as you may know, the race for the Presidential title is still going as none of the five candidates were able to secure a majority of the vote. To then determine the winner, a run-off election is taking place from Noon Thursday- Noon Friday, so be sure to vote again! ASAP! Nathan LaBarba ’14 and Vin Recca ‘12 (additional site at go/recca) will be facing off for the Presidential title.

However, amidst the Presidential Race, some students were curious as to the delay of the result release. This was clarified in the all-student email sent releasing the results and the upcoming run-off. Due to alleged violations of campaign rules brought against Presidential Candidate Mugo Mutothori, the Election Council held the release until they reached a decision.

The Council decided to disqualify the candidate due to “violations of campaign rules… campaigning once polls open.” This was described as a “direct violation of the Section VI: Campaign rules, Articles 4 and 5,” articles stipulating that all campaigning must occur during the official campaign period, ending at the beginning of the voting period. Article 5 specifically defines what ‘campaigning’ is.

On a more positive note though, this was a recent high in voter turnout, with 1049 people voting! On my rough estimate of approx. 2,600 students here at Middlebury… that would make for nearly a 40% voter turnout. Whether due to the caliber of the candidates, the excitement of a presidential election on the heels of a resignation, or just more interest in SGA — it’s a heartening change. Let’s pull an even higher vote for the run-off, and maybe in the spring we’ll reach 90% (heck, a gal can dream, right?). Go/vote by noon today!

Irene Recovery: What You Can (Still) Do To Help

Students Assist in Hurricane Irene Recovery (Photo Courtesy of Tiffany Sargent)

As the new academic year began for Middlebury College Community, so did a new chapter in Vermont History – the beginning stages of recovery from the damage of Hurricane Irene. Reports of damage to Vermont from Irene inundated the news in late August as images of covered bridges collapsing and flooding shocked the nation. As Middblog previously reported at the time, Vermont was declared a federal disaster area while the Middlebury locale luckily escaped without any damage.

Students may have noticed road closures on their way back to campus, seen pictures of the incredible volunteer response of Athletic Teams on campus for pre-season on the Middlebury College website homepage, or noticed the incredibly thorough Irene coverage of The Campus’ first issue, on the front cover , staff editorial, and Reader Op-Ed from Senator Sanders. As of September 27th, hundreds of Middlebury faculty, staff, and students had already volunteered over 2,800 hours.

But the recovery is far from over.

SGA Sound Off: Presidential Elections begin with new election guidelines

Brittany, a new contributor to Middblog, will be writing a semi-regular SGA column for the betterment of all students, as it is their Student Government after all!

After a heated presidential election season last spring, the election season has begun again! Of course, there are the traditional First-Year Senatorial Positions (good luck guys and gals!), but the race I’ll have my eye on is the President Election. Since Riley O’Rourke, President elect, resigned his post due to personal reasons (as The Campus covered), the field has opened once more.

With five candidates and the new election guidelines as set by the Arnowitz-Esten Fair Elections Act of 2011 in play for this election, it’s sure to be one to follow! Never voted? No better time to start than now! Read more

Real World: San Diego Episode 1 Recap

Each week, I’ll be writing up a recap of the most recent episode of Real World: San Diego, MTV’s reality show featuring Middlebury grad Frank Sweeney, ’11

The Premise:  For those of you who haven’t  been watching “The Real World” since it first began in 1992 (before the class of 2015 was born), here’s the premise: get a bunch of volatile, opinionated, horny 20-somethings into one house. Add copious amounts of alcohol. Now capture everything on camera, edit it down to the most dramatic, backstabbiest moments, and broadcast it to the world.

The Cast: There’s Frank, emotional, openly bisexual and looking for love; Alexandra, the object of Frank’s drunken affections (regrettably not single) ; Ashley, a 24-year-old model from Connecticut; Nate, a nuclear engineer and self-proclaimed “womanizer”; Priscilla, a 19-year-old who gets left behind when the gang hits the bar; Sam, a lesbian college student who just wants to be “one of the boys”; and Zach, the muscular football player looking to score some “young babes”.

Episode One: “First Impressions”

For all intents and purposes, this week’s premiere could have been called  ”The Frank Sweeney Show.”
