MiddKids trump Tufts’ YouTube Applicants

Now that I’m in, I’ll say it, College Applications tend to be a bit campy. Admirable Institutions, hoping to modernize the process (and soften the perception around their Death-Star-Formidable-like-appearance) often make a big show of offering “fun” ways to differentiate yourself from the thousands of generic students just like you. Tufts’ latest application supplement, the YouTube video, has generated a lot of press, but in reality, the videos come off as the same “overenthusiastic-intelligent–volunteering-athletic-quirky-if I add any more personal characteristics I’ll have a nervous breakdown-type” of college applicants.

Sam Wyer ’12 and Zach Blair ’12 (Midd Students) added their own video to the batch of Tufts Class of 2014 Applicants, and its…different. Even a Tufts admissions officer applauded their sense of humor on the Class Facebook page, go Middlebury! (and good luck to the two Middkids on their acceptance into Tufts)

Campus 10/1

This week in The Campus:

  • Op-ed by Ronald D. Liebowitz: The President of the College fires back after last week’s Campus editorial. He tends to take the polite view citing frequent lunches with students in the dining hall and the lack of student participation at open meetings as evidence that he has stepped outside Old Chapel to meet students where they are. Tim Spears addressed the separate CORE survey issues on his blog, One Dean’s View. MiddBlog editor Robert LaMoy weighs in on alcohol issues too in an op-ed.
  • Admissions refocuses international strategy: The Admissions Office is moving to recruit more international students from “wealthier metropolitan areas in Western Europe and Hong Kong” to reduce the amount of financial aid needed. Currently, the average financial aid package for international students is $9000 more than the average financial aid package for domestic students. The key quote from Bob Clagett: “We believe that international students bring a broad perspective to our student body regardless of their socio-economic background.”
  • Winter academics stay close to home: So no abroad offerings for J-term this year. But we can palate that. After all, how many students went to Nepal to study Buddhism anyway? But everything else is basically staying the same. Snow bowl shuttle going strong (albeit w/ higher ticket costs once you get to the Bowl) thanks to the SGA funding ACTR. MCAB events will try to program pretty much every night with trivia, pub nights, dances, without budget cuts. J-term workshops are self-funded anyway, so they’ll stick around. While we wait for the snow to fall, try on this aphorism coined by MiddBlog editor George Altshuler: “Find the J-term in your every day.”
  • The Interface: A new column by Andrew Forsthoefel ’11 shows that the Local section dominates the paper with awesome articles and insightful commentary. The column on Addison County town/gown relations ask students to share the stories of “the greater Middlebury family.” This week’s editorial advocates for local participation in a global institution.

The 2013 Challenge

Hey Class of 2013 (and 2013.5),

We here at MiddBlog have been fighting the glossy admissions brochure for years (except for maybe this, which is awesome). There’s nothing worse than deciding on where to go to school by looking at expensive, racially diverse photography in colorful admissions materials. As I write this, massive campus tours are walking by my window, each parent with a Middlebury viewbook (that dark yellow-covered one) in hand.

You’ll learn more by visiting the campus on special “Preview Days” coming this April 13th and April 19th. Well, maybe… The Admissions Office are fantastic folks (shout out to Jenny Schneider ’07), but truth be told, we want you to come to Middlebury. We will put on our song-and-dance show (maybe even serve something extra nice in the dining halls) for you while you’re here. It’s not that we’re lying to you; we just want to put our best foot forward.

Still, though, 2013 deserves the rough-and-tumble, authentic Middlebury experience. And so MiddBlog announces…

The 2013 Challenge

If you’re coming to the Middlebury campus in the next month, submit a 140-character answer to the following question: Why do you think you got into Middlebury?

Email your answer to tips [at] midd-blog [dot] com or message @middblog on twitter with your answer.  Deadline: April 12, 2009.  Noon EDT.

The most interesting and provacative answers will win a personal “authentic campus tour” complete with “everything you wanted to know but your tourguide would never tell you.” Not only is this tour personal (just you and your fam, if they’re around), but you will be ensured no B.S. No talk about 1 million+ volumes in the library, that’s for sure. Instead, we’ll talk about the hook up culture, why the CFA was built upside-down and backwards, how many dishes student steal every semester, which social house got banned last year, and exactly how much money the school spends on Quidditch.

Middlebury: unglossy, unpretty, undressed.

Welcome Middlebury 2013!

Please give a warm welcome to the Class of 2013 and 2013.5!

This Friday, acceptance letters went out to the near 50% of the non-ED accepted. Students have the option of coming up to Midd for two sets of preview days April 13-14th or April 19-20th. So, if you see some accepted prospies wandering around campus, give ‘em a pat on the back, a congrats, and a welcome to our community.

MiddBlog wishes you good luck on your decisions. Of course, we want you to come to Midd but we know there are plenty of other fantastic schools out there. Already know you’re coming? AskHiba is a good starting place for some of those burning questions. Of course, you’re always welcome to leave comments here or email MiddBlog at: tips at midd-blog dot com.
