The Hunt 2013: Recap

Hear about the Hunt?  Middlebury’s annual J-term scavenger hunt came to an end this weekend, after three long days of crazy activities, art projects, and intense video editing.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out the challenges here.  Here are some of the Huntmasters’ favorite videos, enjoy!

Dull edges? go/skitune at your service

If today’s snowstorm has got you psyched for skiing or snowboarding for tomorrow or the rest of the week, you may want to make sure you’re going out with the right gear.

Midd’s resident ski guy, Tom Crocker ’11.5, has got you covered. You’ve probably noticed his 8.5″ x 11″ signs around campus the past few months with some snowflakes on them with weblinks to go/skitune or go/skituning.

“Most people don’t realize that we are a door-to-door service. We will pick your skis or snowboard up tune it all up then have it back to you…within 2 to 48 hours,” Crocker says. The online order form is short, and with such a quick turnaround time, students (and faculty and staff, too) are able to get their skis ready for the mountain without delay.

He says business has been great, and is considering hiring another student or two to help. Publicity from the business’ Facebook page, ads on Facebook, and a December article in The Campus, Crocker adds, “I think my customers are also helping out a fair amount; it’s such an easy and convenient process that I think people are rather impressed with the fast turn around time and the quality of work done to their skis and snowboards that they are telling their friends about it.”

Middlebury Ski Tune got its start in Old Stone Mill, where the tuning workshop is located. Crocker says that it’s definitely been a source of “entrepreneurial support.” He saw the need for a more convenient and consistent tune-up service for the Middlebury campus, and once he got it started, he says, “It was a fun way to escape the busy schedule of Middlebury and get a quick taste of the real world.”

Not sure if you need a tune-up? Crocker’s advice:

If you are trying to figure out whether you need to get your skis tuned, ask yourself the following questions. Have my skis/snowboard been tuned since the beginning of the season? Have I tuned my skis/snowboard within the last 3-5 times that I’ve gone skiing/snowboarding? Have I ever had my skis/snowboard tuned? Do my skis/snowboard feel fast or like they are holding an edge on icy snow? If you answered no to any of those questions, you should get you skis/snowboard tuned.

Project on Creativity & Innovation in the Liberal Arts

Everywhere I go, I get treated like a D-list celebrity on account of the fame and fortune I have acquired while typing MiddBlog. Yet, my adoring fans are always asking, “Sarah F., I love you, but why are you still blogging? You graduated, remember?”

The answer is simple, really. I’m still blogging because I’m now kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really a staff member. In addition to Carol’s Hungry Mind, you can also find my non-online personality at the Old Stone Mill, the new home of the Project on Creativity & Innovation in the Liberal Arts.

In my capacity as an independent researcher for PCILA, there are two things I want to draw your attention to:

First is the “What Does Middlebury Mean to You?” video contest. President Ron Liebowitz sent an e-mail out regarding this on September 25 at 10:44 a.m. In case you missed it, here are a few key details:

  • Submissions may take any form, as long as they can be viewed on a computer and online. Examples include, but are not limited to, video, slideshow, audio recording of music and/or spoken word, interpretive dance, documentary, artwork, photography, and animation. The possibilities are endless!
  • The deadline is 5 p.m. on November 3. That’s a Monday. It also happens to be the day before Barack Obama will be elected the next President of the United States of America. Just sayin’.
  • The fine print. Entries must be no more than 2 minutes, viewable on a computer and online, and contain NO copyrighted music (original compositions, only).
And did I mention that the first prize is $300 and second prize is $100? Chicka, chicka yeah!
Second, you can still apply for space in the Old Stone Mill! If you would like an application, you can either stop by or e-mail oldstonemill@middlebury.edu. We already have some great projects underway: Chinese calligraphy, an online arts magazine, woodworking, and painting and collage. Students are also planning some great upcoming events: The Hunt (an epic scavenger hunt during J-Term) and a series called “Dinner with Strangers.” So, if you’ve got a creative and/or innovative project/activity/event in mind, we want to hear from you!
