Want a Date for Winter Carnival?

Winter CarnivalTo continue the tradition of the oldest student-run Winter Carnival in the country, Middlebury kicks off its 90th annual Winter Carnival on Thursday night! Thursday also marks one of the most fun/dreaded holidays of the year: Valentines Day. But whether you have a steady beau or are just making eyes at your proctor crush, I think that this year’s Winter Carnival events can work to your advantage.

Lets start with Thursday: as Winter Carnival gears up, what better excuse to hang out with that special someone, than to enter as a team into the Snow Sculptures Competition on McCullough Lawn. Any sculpture of Cupid will have my vote this year. And as the night falls, what could be more romantic than a kiss by the bonfire under a sky full of fireworks! Oh, and don’t forget to show off your stellar dance moves at Orange Crush (remember, there’s no school Friday so you can stay out all night!)

2/19: Winter Carnival kicked off last night with a gigantic bonfire on the Milliken-Hadley Ross Quad. Students gathered in the then still snowing weather to warm up and watch the soaring flames. The lengthy fireworks show also was a hit bringing applause at the end. Orange Crush was packed later in evening with student dancing the night away to 80s music.

2/20: Ski races kicked off today at the Snow Bowl and Rikert/Breadloaf. Frost Mountain Nordic gives us a wrap-up of today’s Nordic skiing: “Not the greatest outing for the Middlebury nordic team, but some fine performances nonetheless. Excellent forerunning by Will Earle, Sophie McKibben and Eliza Carver.  Simon Thomas-Train was back as emcee–check out his tail.  Tony Clark saved the day by driving his groomer over from Blueberry Hill after the Midd machine died on Battell.” Photo by Frost Mountain Nordic. Middlebury Nordic Results. The Wood Brothers performed in the evening in the newly renovated McCullough Social Space. Students danced and sang along to the chill jazz/folk tunes.

2/21: Saturday of Winter Carnival tradition continues with the Winter Ball which features fantastic food, drink, music, and more. As the big formal event of the year, students stayed well into the evening dancing first the Project DCQ, then to DJ Ben Schiffer, and lastly to Milkman. Earlier in the evening, many went to Mead Chapel for the Vermont A cappella Summit Concert featuring Cadence, Duwende, and Midd Graduate Philip Hamilton ’82…
