The Hunt 2013: Recap

Hear about the Hunt?  Middlebury’s annual J-term scavenger hunt came to an end this weekend, after three long days of crazy activities, art projects, and intense video editing.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out the challenges here.  Here are some of the Huntmasters’ favorite videos, enjoy!

Middlebury Center for Social Entrepreneurship Launch

A year ago, a J-term class along with Professor Jon Isham and several key advisors developed the framework for the Middlebury Center for Social Entrepreneurship, and this week, the Center is celebrating its official launch with a series of lectures, workshops, and keynotes by top social entrepreneurs.  Having been a member of that class, I can personally say that the work that will be done and that has already been done at this center is very important and very exciting and I can’t wait to see what comes out of it.

Social entrepreneurship at its core is about finding new and innovative solutions for challenging problems.  It is about creativity and persistence and coming up with solutions that correct not only the problem at hand, but the systemic causes behind these problems.  A brief description from those at the center itself:

The Middlebury Center for Social Entrepreneurship is designed to be a hub in a growing global network of schools, colleges, NGOs, government agencies, businesses, and foundations that are committed to sharing ideas and resources in order to build 21st century solutions.

This week, the MCSE is hosting its first annual symposium on social entrepreneurship.  If you missed the opening address last night by Bill Drayton, Ashoka Founder, don’t worry, there is plenty more to come.  Check out the full schedule of events to see when lectures, keynotes, and other important events are occurring.  For those on campus, a series of exciting workshops are starting in just a few hours at noon, focusing on a range of topics surrounding the issue of social entrepreneurship.

After the jump, a little more about what the Center will be doing into the future.

Middblog on MiddSTART

Hey everyone! Love Middblog? So do we!

As you may have noticed, this semester we have undergone a series of site renovations and are working on expanding our coverage to more events and activities at the college.  With these developments in mind, we are asking our loyal readers to donate a few dollars to our MiddSTART project.  We will use funds raised to finance an advertising campaign, pay for tickets to events for our writers to cover, and continue with site renovations.

Any amount you can contribute would be fantastic and with everyone together, hopefully we can reach our goals quickly.  Because Middblog operates entirely independently of the college, we usually end up paying for upgrades and the like ourselves, so this would be a big improvement.  Plus, we’ll write happy happy things about all of you donors on the blog.

See? Look how happy we are. Think of how much happier we could be...

MiddSTART is a relatively new program created by the Project for Creativity and Innovation.  The program “helps students to find the funding they need to explore their interests through creative, entrepreneurial, and innovative projects, and it enables alumni and friends of the College to combine a number of gifts to support a project that particularly appeals to them.”  These are projects that are typically not supported by traditional grants or funding structures.

Even though it is a relatively new project, MiddSTART has already helped fund a library in the Huruma slums of Nairobi, Kenya, a Children’s support home in Eldoret, Kenya, and a series of students scholarships at Middlebury.  You can see all of the past and present projects here.
