SGA Sound Off: Yes, Midd has an SGA. This is what we do.

Student Government Association Word Cloud. Yeah, that awesome!

Whenever the SGA is mentioned here at Middlebury, it always seems to solicit a rather unusual response: “Wait we have one?!” The follow up questions come in close for second and third: “What does it do? That’s just for PoliSci Majors right?”

As a resident SGA Senior Senator, I’d like to clarify a few things. First, we have an SGA. Second,  the SGA does (or can and should do lots of things). And third, SGA is not just for PoliSci majors (take it from me, a former neuroscience, literary studies, and now finally history major).

From my approximate eight weeks in office, I’d love to quickly provide an understanding of what I’ve learned the SGA does, why you should care, and how you should get involved.

What does SGA do? SGA serves as the central voice of the student body. Students’ dreams, hopes, fears, and all types of emotions and desires should be the concern and soul of the SGA.

The SGA, feasibly, can do two things:

SGA Sound Off: Run-Off Begins Amidst Candidate Disqualification

Another election season, another season of election mayhem! From the chalk decor freshly sprouting all over campus to the pictures and videos of candidates in their million dollar smiles — there’s nothing quite like awaiting SGA Election results that cause my heart to skip a few beats and my eyes to be glued to my email.

First, let me be one among many to congratulate the two  newest members of the Senate: First Year Senators  Rana Ahdelhama and Danny Zhang! All of the candidates were clearly devoted to both student government and their class, and Blake, you made a great campaign.

Second, as you may know, the race for the Presidential title is still going as none of the five candidates were able to secure a majority of the vote. To then determine the winner, a run-off election is taking place from Noon Thursday- Noon Friday, so be sure to vote again! ASAP! Nathan LaBarba ’14 and Vin Recca ‘12 (additional site at go/recca) will be facing off for the Presidential title.

However, amidst the Presidential Race, some students were curious as to the delay of the result release. This was clarified in the all-student email sent releasing the results and the upcoming run-off. Due to alleged violations of campaign rules brought against Presidential Candidate Mugo Mutothori, the Election Council held the release until they reached a decision.

The Council decided to disqualify the candidate due to “violations of campaign rules… campaigning once polls open.” This was described as a “direct violation of the Section VI: Campaign rules, Articles 4 and 5,” articles stipulating that all campaigning must occur during the official campaign period, ending at the beginning of the voting period. Article 5 specifically defines what ‘campaigning’ is.

On a more positive note though, this was a recent high in voter turnout, with 1049 people voting! On my rough estimate of approx. 2,600 students here at Middlebury… that would make for nearly a 40% voter turnout. Whether due to the caliber of the candidates, the excitement of a presidential election on the heels of a resignation, or just more interest in SGA — it’s a heartening change. Let’s pull an even higher vote for the run-off, and maybe in the spring we’ll reach 90% (heck, a gal can dream, right?). Go/vote by noon today!

SGA Sound Off: Final Hours of Presidential and First Year Senate Race

After enjoying the gorgeous weekend (almost 80 in Vermont in October? Is this heaven already?!), are you ready to cast your vote in the upcoming elections? While The Campus endorsed Vin Recca ‘12 Thursday and the candidates faced off in Middlebury’s first-ever Presidential Candidate Forum Friday afternoon, the fate of the elections is still in the hands of the student body.

Still deciding who to vote for? Be sure to read the Candidate Interviews published by The Campus, and check out each candidate’s Facebook Page for more information! For ease of access, we’ve gathered all the facebook pages/events below (so be sure to log-in order to view). Best of luck to all of the candidates, voting begins Monday at noon @ go/vote!

SGA Sound Off: Presidential Elections begin with new election guidelines

Brittany, a new contributor to Middblog, will be writing a semi-regular SGA column for the betterment of all students, as it is their Student Government after all!

After a heated presidential election season last spring, the election season has begun again! Of course, there are the traditional First-Year Senatorial Positions (good luck guys and gals!), but the race I’ll have my eye on is the President Election. Since Riley O’Rourke, President elect, resigned his post due to personal reasons (as The Campus covered), the field has opened once more.

With five candidates and the new election guidelines as set by the Arnowitz-Esten Fair Elections Act of 2011 in play for this election, it’s sure to be one to follow! Never voted? No better time to start than now! Read more

Sunday Reading

We’re bringing back Sunday Reading!  Every week I’ll be posting links of events that have happened outside of the Middlebury sphere or just random things I find interesting.  Check it out.

Politics:

*Congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was a victim of a gunman’s fire  Saturday morning.  She is still in critical condition, but doctors say she is responsive.  6 others were killed and 12 injured.  Updates here.

*Sunday morning, a vote began in Southern Sudan to secede from the rest of the country, a referendum that is the result of a decades-long liberation struggle.  The vote will continue for the rest of the week. Updates here.

Environment:

*On New Years Eve in Beebe, Arkansas, 5000 birds dropped out of the sky, probably due to a fireworks display in the area.

*A facility in Virginia is turning Four Loco into fuel for cars.

Other:

*Just found this handy to-do list website/iPhone app, teuxdeux and am obsessed.

*This song, Horse Outside by the Rubberbandits, is the most popular song in Europe right now.

*I may have watched this father-daughter cover of “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros many many times this week.
