A New Leaf

As we hit summer, I write with an update about MiddBlog.

Emily Gullickson ’10 will be taking over as lead editor for the summer and 2009-2010 school year. She is currently the author of the (wildly) popular Sunday Reading series. Her very first MiddBlog post was at the end of last summer posting from the Democratic National Convention in Denver. She started posting Sunday Reading during her time abroad in Italy. Emily will be choosing and leading a new team of writers for next year, once again delivering some of the freshest and most interesting content about Middlebury. If you’re interested in writing for MiddBlog, contact Emily: tips at midd-blog dot com.

I already wrote a goodbye post back in 2007, so I don’t feel much need to do so again. The fact that I’m not worried about MiddBlog is a reflection on how far MiddBlog has come. As a now super-senior Feb (I’ll still graduate in four years, Mom), I will continue to write occasionally for MiddBlog throughout the next semester, but it will clearly stand on its own (and grow) without me because of the community commitment to making the blog a place for Middlebury to congregate online. Middlebury’s online landscape is vastly different from when MiddBlog debuted back in October 2006. My one wish for a more vibrant online space reflective of the Middlebury community has somewhat come true, and I’m working on making that more true with the development of the new institutional website.

So thanks for reading. Y’all are awesome. Stay with MiddBlog over the summer for the latest!

Welcome New Readers!

Welcome new readers of MiddBlog!

An all-student email re: breakfast option in Atwater next year has persuaded many new student visitors to come to this blog.

What is MiddBlog? It’s alternative news for Middkids, run and written by students. We post the latest and sometimes greatest on what’s going down on the Middlebury campus. For instance, take a look at our latest articles on: summer storage options, the future of dining services, and Ron Liebowitz kissing a cow.

We also have a several year archive of content: numerous Middkid-produced YouTube videos, historical facts about Middlebury, and Quidditch galore. Take a look at 2008 in review. Many of you also used our Housing Guide 2009 for roomdraw this year and a lot of people also enjoy our weekly Sunday Reading.

So, we encourage you to come back and stay up-to-date with the community on MiddBlog (yes, we even post during the summer!). We do Facebook and Twitter and Posts by RSS feed or Posts by Email.

Better yet: leave a comment, speak up, join the discussion. We take email at: tips [at] midd-blog [dot] com.

Just an occasional reminder that if you read and enjoy MiddBlog on a regular basis, we encourage you to subscribe by joining our email list (you get posts via a daily email) or via RSS, Real Simple Syndicaton. If you’re on Facebook, become a fan! Twitter? @middblog. Got something to share with MiddBlog readers? Email tips at midd-blog dot com.

Welcome to our newest readers! Looking for some of our older content? Check it out:

Sunday Reading: Emily outlines the “best” links on the web with a particular theme or twist each week. Keep up-to-date on the world outside the bubble, or maybe just maintain your fashion sense.

Midd’s YouTube: MiddBlog often posts some of the best of what Middlebury has to offer. When comedians make fun of Quidditch and Middkids respond to Obama’s election, this is a treasure trove of Midd culture and vibrancy.

Campus: MiddBlog doesn’t claim to have news on everything Midd nor do we claim to have the team to properly report in depth, but The Campus does a decent job of getting it on record. We post a few highlighted articles each week to show you the key parts of news at Middlebury.

SGA: This has been an up-and-down year for the SGA. Read about it.

MiddBlog’s 1,000th Comment!

MiddBlog reached a milestone today: we have amassed a unique collection of 1,000 comments!

MiddBlog’s first comment happened on October 16, 2006 at 11:25 p.m. Holly wrote:

“Good luck, guys! Let us know if you need help!

–Holly, from Wesleying”

Our 1,000th comment happened today at 10:17 a.m. Professor Jason Mittell wrote:

“Ryan – I appreciate your point about fostering competition rather than encouraging action for its own sake. However, I’ve heard that the participation on the budget website has not been particularly strong, and that students have especially been silent on the topic unless prodded by specific questions (like the fate of 51 Main on Tim’s blog). So incentivizing actions that should be self-motivating is unfortunately necessary.

And I second your comparative point – you can’t simply say ‘save this’ without saying ‘but cut this instead.’”

It makes me really, really glad that Jason approves of cash prizes, especially in light of what I am about to do . . .

Congratulations, Jason!

MiddBlog Nominated for Best Alt Media 2008!

U.S. News and World Report’s Paper Trail Blog has a contest up for Best Alternative Media Outlet 2008, as part of larger media contests (best college newspaper, news story, etc.). MiddBlog has been nomainted!

So, if you like MiddBlog, vote for us! We’ve got stiff competition in Wesleying (our model) and of course IvyGate, gossip-girl for the Big Ivies (as opposed to us little kids). But we’d love your support.

Vote Here.

EDIT 2/09: Papertrail is following up about possible voting fraud involving MiddBlog. Again, keep voting, but keep the hacking out of this, please!
