Summer Video Roundup 3

Arabic School does skits…you know, like you did at camp, just in Arabic.

German School has a pretty awesome tradition of the doing the Threepenny Opera.

Finally, some sign that Middlebury @ Mills is alive and kicking — Spanish School slideshow. Looks fun!

It’s harder than you think to get to the roof of BiHall nowadays. This video gives you the daytime version of what it’s like topside.

Storage Standoff

If you look around at the posters around campus, you’ll notice a quiet yet vicious debate has been set off in the summer storage arena. The big deal is the creation of Greenleaf Storage which now directly competes with Campus Storage. Both attempt to serve students who have their storage boxes picked up from their room and then delivered the following term. This can be a popular (although questionably profitable) service because students don’t want to deal with schlepping their boxes to their own homes or to Fletcher Barn. The debate heats up: Campus Storage charges Greenleaf with copying their business model.

Here’s a rough and completely unscientific rundown of services :

Greenleaf Storage

  • PRO: their signup excel spreadsheet (that automatically tabulates the cost) is a heck of a lot easier to use than the PDF that Campus Storage sends out
  • PRO: you can buy boxes directly from Greenleaf ($2 a pop), discounted if you use Greenleaf
  • PRO: appears slightly less expensive, but not by much
  • PRO: can deliver for (very early) arrivals next year (8/30-8/31)
  • CON: new business, unproven
  • CON: unclear about “no base fees” and due dates and other charges? EDIT: You have to look in a separate PDF file to find these details.
  • CON: cannot store for study abroad terms at all
  • CON: does not accept cash, only credit (via paypal) and check

Campus Storage (Jamie McKenna ’09)

  • PRO: experience
  • PRO: very clear instructions for how to pack your boxes
  • PRO: can deliver for early arrivals (listed as 9/3-9/4)
  • CON: not providing or selling boxes this year
  • CON: charge an extra $30 if you don’t make the deadline of submitting info by this Friday
  • CON: does not accept credit card, only cash or check

MiddBlog wants to know: How will you store your stuff this summer?

That Summer Job

MiddBlog outlined some of the best summer jobs/internships a few weeks back. But as May quickly approaches, it’s hard to not compare yourself to others when it comes to summer opportunities. The Career Services Office (CSO) makes it even easier to compare yourself. In a 2008 document meant to show off all the cool stuff Middkids did the past summer, the CSO lists full names linked with salary/bonus and the name of the employer. But in actuality, this document serves to just fuel the feeling of competition. Where did you work this past summer? How much did you make?

It’s one thing to list the employers and salaries. It’s another to link the names of students to this information. The majority of Middkids made $1,000-$2,000 over the summer, with 18 making $5000 or more. The list of employers is impressive: HBO, Abercrombie and Fitch, Barclay’s Capital, YMCA, Otter Creek Brewing, etc.

Now, I’m sure these Middkids offered this information voluntarily but I would bet that many had no idea that their names were being used in this way. Perhaps this summer’s list will look drastically different with internships hard to come by, but my hope is that CSO is a bit more sensitive with this information.

The Campus 4/23

campus23In an effort to deepen MiddBlog’s coverage of campus issues, this is a recurring column that comments on selected Campus newspaper articles, published most Thursdays of the school year. This allows a place for the Middlebury community to comment, expand, and discuss important issues in a dynamic way.

This Week in The Campus:

  • Dwyer wins coveted CC chair: I don’t know if I call it “coveted” but it is a key student position even if students know not what SCCOCC does for students. Dwyer was the right choice despite an interesting run by Ethan Schmertzler ’12.
  • Preview days host 400 students: Well, it’s up to them now. It’s like we’ve asked these students on a date and we’re waiting for  response. I even met up with both of the 2013 Challenge winners, both Febs and both coming to Middlebury for almost certain.
  • Summer students to bunk in Battell: I’ve been waiting for someone to say something about this. There actually is a large contingent of forgotten English-speaking students on campus during the summer. The students quoted in the article seem outraged at $70 rent and meal per week but as a person looking for housing in DC this summer, I know that staying at Midd to work is actually quite profitable (for a student) especially if you snag a hard-to-get C level job for 30+ hours a week.
  • All dining halls will serve same main course: Now there’s an idea to even up the lines. Less variety but good call overall. Director of Dining Services Matt Biette says students should avoid the rush by coming “a little earlier or a little later.” Students don’t choose when to eat lunch. We have class, we have a routine, we’re busy. If you think the majority of students can nicely and orderly disperse themselves across lunchtime dining hours then you are mistaken. Even dinner — practice, rehearsals, meetings. We eat when we eat because that’s when our schedules allow it. Biette is right about getting in different and separate lines for Ross though.

Top Summer Opps

Check MOJO for these or websites below:

  • Brighter Planet: “The Video Production/Field Intern will work with the Field Team to produce photos and short videos about environmental awareness- with particular focus on issues and stories related to climate change and carbon footprints. These videos will be used for our website, media outreach, marketing materials, and partnership collaboration. The intern will split time between Middlebury and the road, visiting Brighter Planet-supported renewable energy projects throughout the US and attending an array of events in Bessie, our Dodge Sprinter powered by waste vegetable oil. Interns should be prepared to work on weekends.”
  • SEALNet: Southeast Asian service learning in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. Deadline extended to April 11.
  • Addison Independent: “Join the newsroom at the Addison Independent, Addison County’s twice weekly newspaper. In addition to covering stories around the county for the print edition of the paper, this person will also form part of the paper’s new online team to produce audio slideshows, podcasts, and blog posts. Top-notch writing skills are essential.”
  • Career Services Office (CSO): Great if you want to be at Middlebury and want to get to know the CSO team. Doesn’t hurt for next year when you’re actually job searching…
