Sunday Reading: Yes, Please Do Talk Nerdy To Me

Hello everyone! So here we are at that midway point of Jterm! Whether the glass seems half-full (finally, skiing with real snow! Time for the hunt!) or half-empty (only two more weeks to deadline…), I hope this installment of Sunday Reading finds you well and fills your metaphorical glass with semi-useful information, a pause of entertainment, and smiles.

Science and Harry Potter: Scientists re-discovered a monkey previously thought to be extinct in the forests of Indonesia. The Miller’s Grizzled Langurs caught researchers by surprise, they had been hunted to near extinction for their meat and bezoar stones in the past. Harry Potter fans, according to the Washington Post, should know of Bezoars from Professor Snape’s lecture to first year students, as they “are believed by some to neutralize poison.”

Environment: As though the environmental movement isn’t young and hip enough — check out the Swap-O-Matic, an eco-friendly vending machine. And also in Environmental news, not only is Midd going to be installing a solar farm (as Middblog reported on earlier this week), but Sweden is exploring installing a four lane bike superhighway!

Otter Nonsense Parodies “Real World”

Middlebury’s Otter Nonsense improv troupe released a short video parody of reality TV show “Real World” in anticipation of their upcoming performance. The minute-long clip features Adam Benay ’13.5 as a belligerent Frank Sweeney ’11, a housemate on the current season of “Real World” set in San Diego.

Check it out:

The Otters, who last weekend won the Collegiate Improv Tournament’s New England Regionals, will be performing on Tuesday, November 15th at 10:30PM in Johnson. The show will feature their brand new “housemate” Adam Milano ’14. Don’t miss it!

Sunday Reading: The Ghoulish Edition.

Well it’s fall break here and campus is as empty as ever.  Most midterms are finished too, so we’ve got all the more reason to celebrate.  Last week, Midd got a new SGA president and experienced what has to be the last 75 degree day of the year. (Also, I’m going to apologize ahead of time for my New York Times addiction in light of the cap on internet reading, I can’t help myself.) In other news:

TEXAS: Most of us have heard by now that Texas recently ended the tradition of serving last meals to death row inmates, but the food rationing has gone beyond final meals.  In an effort to save $2.8 million in food costs, officials have cut lunches on the weekends for inmates in the Texas prison system.

TELEVISION: Reality TV shows are designed to be lost and for the Price is Right, only one contestant in its 38 year history correctly guessed the exact value of the Showcase Showdown.  Here’s an excellent profile of that contestant and beating the game.

RANDOM: Apparently, a UK man special-ordered a size 14.5 slipper for one foot that was slightly larger than the other.  Instead, the man received a size 1,450 slipper from the Chinese manufacturer- according to him, it is the size of a family car.  Some speculate the story is a hoax and an elaborate PR stunt for the slippers.  Either way, its a freaking giant slipper.

HALLOWEEN: In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, here’s a humorous piece about political correctness about day of the dead and halloween in schools. “Finally, to those parents who are offended by our Day of the Dead celebration, I’d like to point out that there are parents who are offended that you are offended.”

MEDICINE: Preliminary results from a clinical trial indicate that nearly half of children treated with an anti-malaria vaccine were protected from the disease, a result of over 25 years of work and study.

MILITARY: While the debate still continues at Midd, our Ivy-league colleagues have recently re-introduced the ROTC program to their campuses.  The program, barred at many colleges and universities due to discriminatory policies has been reinstated in some after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

And your video of the week:

Sunday Reading: Maybe a High Speed Chase Wasn’t the Best Idea After All

Welcome back to another week of Sunday reading.  This week Quidditch kids swarmed the campus, reminding us just how nerdy we are.  Parents took over, alternately looking lost and trying to reclaim their college days, and Middkids occupied the path between the Library and Mead Chapel. Outside of Middlebury, other stuff has been happening:

ISRAEL: In a trade with the Palestinian militant faction Hamas, Israel will be releasing 477 prisoners, many of which have been convicted of murder, manslaughter, or intentionally causing death.  Few will be returning home, however.

CRIME: Ever thought about evading the police in a high speed car chase?  Best way to escape/elude the police in a district with a strict pursuit policy, among other things.  A former policeman answers this question , and convinced me that although it sounds fun, it’s probably a bad idea.

BUSINESS: So even without Steve Jobs, Apple is worth a lot of money.  Like, a lot.  More than the entire economy of Singapore, more than two entire Apollo space programs, or the entire NFL times ten.  More of this here.

MOVIES: With the official release of the Lion King 3D (I still don’t know how I feel about that,) I bring you: 17 things you might not have known about the Lion King.  My favorite?  #3: The film’s writers referred to the film in private as ‘Bamblet,’ noting the similarity between their movie’s plot and those of ‘Bambi’ and ‘Hamlet.’

HAIR: I’ve decided to list this week’s links in terms of descending helpfulness in terms of, you know, reality.  This writer lists the best 10 TV characters, according to hair.  I would have to say I agree with her on most accounts, although Connie Britton from Friday Night Lights deserves a spot (shameless plug for my current TV obsession.)

GAMES: Procrastinate — really effectively, with these two games.  Is the name a cheese or a font and a memory game.  Harder than you would think.

Well, that’s all folks.  Go do your homework.  Or watch this.
